Dire Straits est un groupe de rock britannique créé à Deptford durant l'été 1977 par Mark Knopfler (guitare et chant), David Knopfler (guitare), John Illsley (guitare basse) et Pick Withers (batterie). Considéré par certains comme l'un des plus grands groupes de rock des années 1980, Dire Straits a vendu plus de 120 millions d'albums depuis ses débuts.

Sultans of Swing, Romeo and Juliet, Telegraph Road, Brothers in Arms, Money for Nothing, Your Latest Trick, Private Investigations, Walk of Life, Calling Elvis, So Far Away, Lady Writer, Twisting by the Pool sont quelques grands succès du groupe.

Le groupe s'est séparé en 1993, bien que son contrat ne prenne officiellement fin qu'en 1995.

L'album contient de la musique composée pour le film 1997 Wag the Dog, réalisé par Barry Levinson. Les chansons de films fonctionnalités créées pour la campagne fictive menée par les protagonistes, y compris "Good Old Shoe", "Le rêve américain", et "Les hommes de la 303".
